Two members of the public who noticed a house was on fire on Crescent Rise in Bounds Green this morning broke into the property and rescued the man from the flames.
He was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service suffering from shock and smoke inhalation.
Station Manager Lee Ware, who was at the fire, said:
We understand two passers-by broke down the kitchen door and pulled him out. I want to commend their bravery, they could well have saved his life, as the room where they found him was badly damaged by the fire.
Over half of the ground and first floor were badly damaged by the fire.
The roof was also damaged and firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to access the roof and cut away roof tiles to damp the area down.
Six fire engines and around 35 firefighters and officers from Hornsey, Finchley, Tottenham and Southgate fire stations attended the incident.
The Brigade was called at 8.49 am and the fire was under control by 10.56 am.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
