Thousands of Londoners gathered on high points from Primrose Hill to Telegraph Hill in the hope of seeing the only eclipse in their lifetimes- only to be disappointed by the clouds that just gave the impression of a gloomy day.
And the sense of anti-climax has been so great that ‘London eclipse gutted’ is trending on Twitter.
Aimee Willmott tweeted that the nearest she saw to an eclipse was a segment of her peeled orange.
Police officers were at hand in Regents Park to hand out protective glasses and many astronomy enthusiasts brought telescopes.
But such important precautions were all rendered utterly redundant by London’s traditional cloudy weather.
