A woman has died in a flat fire in Sutton during the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters were called to the fire at Brighton Road in Sutton at nine minutes past three in the morning.

The London Fire Brigade say:

Crews tackling the fire sadly found the body of a woman in the bedroom. Around a quarter of the second floor flat in the six storey block was left damaged by the fire.

Two fire engines and 14 firefighters and officers from Sutton fire station brought the blaze under control by 4.16 am.

The cause is under investigation and the coroner informed.
