Around 60 firefighters and officers fought a blaze that raged through a three floor terraced house on Richborne Terrace, Oval in the early hours of this morning.
The London Fire Brigade have announced: ‘Sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.’
The fire had been developing for some time before the Brigade was called.
The whole of the second floor was damaged by the fire as well as most of the roof and around half of the ground and first floor.
Eight fire engines from Lambeth, Brixton, Peckham and Clapham fire stations responded and took part in the operation to control the fire.
The Brigade was called at seven minutes past three and the fire was under control by two minutes to five.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
