A fire in the motor room of a lift at the Marriott Hotel in Mayfair has guaranteed instant multimedia news coverage as it’s hosting the Regional Press Awards.

Nominated and award-winning journalists from all over the country are now using their smartphones and everyday professional equipment to publish the drama across the world on the Internet.

300 Journalists attending the annual Regional Press Awards were among the 450 people evacuated.

Although the awards were in mid flow, the journalists promptly put down their drinks and evacuated the hotel while crews brought the fire under control.

Station Manager Jim Smith who was at the fire said:

Hotel staff did a very good job guiding the people to a muster point near the hotel, which gave fire crews quick access to the building. Firefighters confined the fire to a lift motor room on the ground floor, which was slightly damaged by the blaze.

21 firefighters and officers from Soho, Paddington and Euston fire stations attended the incident.

The Brigade was called at 2.07 pm and the fire was under control 51 minutes later.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
