Over 80 firefighters and officers have dealt with a large fire in a range of workshops and pallet yard on East Hall Lane in Rainham this evening.

The fire damaged a number of workshops, two cottages, an annexe flat and also destroyed two light goods vehicles and two cars.

A large stack of pallets was also affected by the fire.

Station Manager Colin Parker who was at the scene said crews had managed to save a large farmhouse from the fast developing blaze:

When firefighters first arrived they noticed that alongside the pallet yard there was a large farmhouse which was in danger of being set alight. Quick thinking crews aimed jets at the house and managed to protect it from the blaze.

Twelve fire engines were at the scene including engines from Wennington, Dagenham and Barking fire stations.

Brigade crews were also working alongside two fire engines from Kent Fire and Rescue Service and Essex County Fire Service.

The Brigade was called at 7.57 pm and the fire was under control by 1.22 in the early hours of this morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
