Liverpool beat Shrewsbury Town 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp, 52, was absent as his young side edged past the League One team.
Klopp decided to rest key senior players for the match, to keep them fresh as they enter the season’s crucial stage.
Liverpool under-23’s boss Neil Critchely, who stood in for Klopp last night, praised the youngsters’ performance in front of a packed crowd.
‘Obviously with young players you’re never quite sure, but I have to say from the first whistle the maturity those young boys showed to play that game was remarkable,’ Critchley said.
The Reds will now face Premier League rival – Chelsea – in the next round.
